Hydro-Turf Sheets Overview
PWC Sheets, Boating Sheets, and Pro Sheets: What's the Difference and Which One Do You Need?
By Kenny P, Hydro-Turf Product Specialist
Alright, I get this question a lot: "Kenny, what's the deal with the sheet goods? How's that different from just buying a kit?" Good question. Sheet goods are one of those things that look simple on the surface but actually open up a whole world of customization once you understand what you're working with. So let me break it down — what each type is, what it's built for, and how to know which one makes sense for your project.
Sheets vs. Kits — What's the Actual Difference?
When you buy a mat kit, you're getting pieces that are already precision-cut to fit your specific watercraft. Peel, stick, done. It's the easiest path and it's what most riders go with.
Sheet goods are the raw material — a full uncut sheet of our EVA foam in your choice of cut style, color, and size. You trim it to fit whatever you're working on. That could be a custom boat deck, a jet boat area that doesn't have a kit, a kayak, a tender, a dock platform, a truck bed — anything you need foam traction on. Sheets are also popular with folks who've got a custom hull layout where a standard kit just won't cut it (pun intended).
The tradeoff is straightforward: kits are easier and guaranteed to fit your model, sheets give you total flexibility. Neither one's better — it just depends on what you're building.
The Four Sheet Types — Here's What We Make
We make four types of sheet goods, and they're each sized and designed for different jobs. Let me run through each one.
PWC Sheets — The Swiss Army Knife
PWC Sheets are our most versatile option. At 37" x 58", they're sized right for personal watercraft applications — think filling in a custom area on your ski, replacing a single section, or building out a platform or dock that needs PWC-scale coverage.
These are also the most customizable sheets in the lineup from an options standpoint. You've got your choice of cut styles — Flat, Cut Groove, Cut Diamond, Molded Diamond, or Cut Waffle — plus you can add PSA backing or go two-tone. Most people add PSA for a clean peel-and-stick install, but there's an important exception worth knowing about.
Stand-up PWC riders often order PWC Sheets without PSA. The reason's simple: PSA is stiff and fights you when you're trying to wrap foam around tight 90-degree corners — like the rails and edges on a stand-up ski. Ordering without PSA lets you apply a thin, even brush coat of DAP Weldwood Contact Cement to both surfaces, let it tack up for 15–30 minutes, then press and conform the sheet exactly where you need it — corners and all. If you're building out a stand-up, that's the move.
Boating Sheets — The Big One
This is where it gets interesting. Boating Sheets are our largest sheet at 43" x 83", designed specifically for boat decking — casting decks, bow platforms, cockpit floors, fiberglass surfaces on center consoles, you name it. PSA backing is always included, because you're going down on a big flat surface and you want that installation to be solid.
The Boating Sheet also has the most cut style options of any sheet in our lineup: Flat, Cut Groove, Wide Groove, and Molded Diamond. Wide Groove is exclusive to this sheet — it's a deeper, wider channel pattern built for wet boat-deck environments where water drainage actually matters. Standard grooves run about 3/4" apart. Wide Groove opens that up to around 2" between channels. When you've got a full casting deck covered in mat and you're walking around fishing in wet shoes, that extra drainage matters.
One thing worth knowing if you go two-tone on a Boating Sheet: that sheet comes with a Brushed finish — a smooth, directional texture that's a little different from the standard Sanded finish on a solid-color sheet, and from the Knurled finish you can option on the camo sheets. It gives a two-tone deck a clean, finished look that plays really well with a matching hull.
And then there's the camo line, which is honestly one of my favorite things we make. More on that below.
Pro Sheets — The Premium Pick
Pro Sheets step up the material game. At 40" x 80", they're precision CNC-cut to the same exacting standard as our Pro mat kit line, in the same premium foam compound — more substantial, more refined feel underfoot. When you open a Pro Sheet you can feel the difference immediately. It's the same Pro-series CNC pattern styling you see on our Pro mat kits — clean, geometric, and built to grip.
Pro Sheets are sold at one flat price with no online add-ons to fuss with. If you want a Laser finish — Wood Grain or Carbon Fiber — etched onto a Pro Sheet, give us a call and we'll set that up directly. Bottom line: the Pro Sheet is the move when you want the absolute best material quality we make in a sheet format.
SUP & Surf Sheets — Built for the Board
SUP and Surf Sheets are purpose-built for stand-up paddleboards, surfboards, and similar applications, and there's a key material difference here worth understanding. SUP/Surf Sheets are made with a softer foam compound than everything else in the sheet lineup. Our standard PWC, Boating, and Pro sheets come in around Shore C 50 hardness — about like the rubber sole of a shoe. SUP/Surf Sheets run softer, around Shore C 40, with a more aggressive brushed texture. That softer, grippier feel is exactly what board sports demand when you're constantly shifting your weight and repositioning your feet.
The cut styles are unique to this sheet too: Cut Groove, Small Diamond, and Long Diamond. Small Diamond uses noticeably smaller diamond cells than the diamond patterns on our PWC or Boating sheets — finer geometry means more grip contact points per square inch, which is exactly what you want barefoot or in soft surf shoes on a moving board. Long Diamond stretches that pattern out for a different look and feel. Both are exclusive to this category, and the sheet comes with PSA included for a fast, strong bond to a fiberglass board. (Got a plastic board? Let us know so we can set you up with the right adhesive for that material.)
Let's Talk About the Camo Boating Sheets
This gets its own section because it's not just a color option — it's a whole different look.
Our camo boating sheets come in several patterns, including Brown Camo, Duck Camo, Gator Camo, Cobblestone, and Swamp Camo. These are made for the fishing-boat crowd — duck boats, bass boats, jon boats, bay boats, anything where you're going for that camo or natural finish look instead of a traditional solid color.
What makes these unique is the finish options. On Flat and Cut Groove camo sheets, you can choose between a Sanded finish (standard) or a Knurled finish — a textured surface treatment that adds a premium grip feel and a different visual character. If you want maximum grip on a wet deck, Knurled is worth the upgrade. Camo is also offered in Molded Diamond, though the finish option doesn't apply there — the molded pattern does the work on its own.
The camo sheets look incredible on a boat that's already wrapped or painted to match. The guys building complete fishing rigs where every detail is dialed in are the ones who tend to go deep on these — and the results speak for themselves.
Cut Style Options on Sheets — Quick Reference
Here's how the cut style options break down across the four sheet types, because it's not the same for each one:
PWC Sheets (37" x 58"): Flat, Cut Groove, Cut Diamond, Molded Diamond, Cut Waffle
Boating Sheets (43" x 83"): Flat, Cut Groove, Wide Groove, Molded Diamond — plus camo options in Flat, Cut Groove, and Molded Diamond
Pro Sheets (40" x 80"): Premium CNC Pro-series pattern — call us for Laser Wood Grain or Carbon Fiber
SUP & Surf Sheets: Cut Groove, Small Diamond, Long Diamond
Which Sheet Should You Buy?
Let me make the decision simple.
You're working on a PWC or need flexible sizing → PWC Sheet
Most versatile option, most cut style choices, and the right call for stand-up riders doing a custom build with contact cement. If you're not sure, start here.
You've got a boat deck, casting platform, or large flat surface → Boating Sheet
Biggest sheet in the lineup, PSA always included, the Wide Groove option for drainage, and the full camo line if you want something that matches your rig. One Boating Sheet covers about 24.7 sq ft — a 14–18 ft boat typically needs 2–4 sheets, a 19–20 ft boat needs 5–6. Always round up.
You want the best material available → Pro Sheet
Premium CNC-cut foam, the same quality as our Pro mat kit line. Worth it when the material quality matters as much as the coverage.
You're rigging a paddleboard or surfboard → SUP & Surf Sheet
Softer foam compound engineered for board sports, PSA included. The Small and Long Diamond patterns are exclusive to this category and built for barefoot grip on a moving board.
A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Order
Sheet goods take a little more effort than kits — you're doing the cutting and fitting yourself. That's well within reach for most people, but go in with a plan:
- Measure twice, order once. Know the dimensions of the area you're covering and add some margin for trimming. If you need more than one sheet, plan how they'll line up at the seams — matching cut styles and colors between sheets looks sharp when it's done right.
- Have the right tools. A fresh sharp blade, a straight edge, and a heat gun if you're working around curves or tight corners. Grooved patterns make seams easier to hide.
- Let rolled sheets relax. Sheets ship rolled, so lay them out flat with some weight on them for a bit before install — it makes the whole job cleaner.
- Prep the surface. Smooth fiberglass, gelcoat, or aluminum just needs a good cleaning with acetone or alcohol and the PSA grabs right on. Textured aluminum, diamond plate, rough non-slip paint, or bare wood? Scuff it and use contact cement for a bulletproof bond.
- Mind the conditions. Install above 70°F, out of direct sunlight, and give it about 24 hours to cure before it sees water. Adhesive hates cold and moisture.
Sheet Goods FAQ
Do the sheets come with adhesive?
Boating Sheets, Pro Sheets, and SUP & Surf Sheets all include PSA (peel-and-stick) backing. PWC Sheets give you the choice — add PSA, or order without it if you're planning to use contact cement for a custom wrap. Either way, on smooth surfaces the PSA bonds great once the surface is clean and dry.
Can I put a sheet on something that isn't a boat?
Absolutely — that's the whole point of sheet goods. Truck beds, coolers, dock platforms, tool boxes, kayaks, tenders, swim platforms... if it needs grippy, comfortable, no-slip footing, our foam works. Just match the surface to the right adhesive method and you're good.
Are EVA foam sheets slippery when they get wet?
Nope — that's the magic of closed-cell EVA. It grips well wet or dry and it doesn't absorb water, which is exactly why it's so popular on duck and hunting boats that live in the wet.
How many Boating Sheets do I need for my boat?
One Boating Sheet covers roughly 24.7 sq ft. As a rough guide, a 14–18 ft boat runs 2–4 sheets and a 19–20 ft boat runs 5–6. Always round up so you've got margin for trimming and seams — and if you want a hand figuring it out for your exact boat, just reach out.
What's the real difference between a sheet and a kit?
A kit is precision-cut to fit a specific watercraft — easiest install, guaranteed fit. A sheet is uncut material you trim yourself, for projects that don't have a kit or where you want full control of the layout. Same quality foam either way.
Can I get a Laser pattern on a Pro Sheet?
Yes — Laser Wood Grain and Laser Carbon Fiber are available on Pro Sheets, but they're set up directly rather than ordered online. Give us a call at (727) 685-3500 and we'll take care of it.
Bottom Line
Sheet goods are how you handle projects that don't have a kit, surfaces that need custom coverage, or builds where you want total control over the layout. PWC Sheets for flexibility, Boating Sheets for large boat surfaces and camo finishes, Pro Sheets for premium material quality, SUP & Surf Sheets for boards. Pick the size that fits your job, choose a cut style that matches your environment, and you're in good shape.
